Building a bespoke home is one of the most significant projects many people will undertake.
Yet too often the experience can feel rushed, confusing or disconnected from the vision homeowners originally had.
That’s why the approach here is deliberately different.
For more than 30 years, homes across Port Stephens and Newcastle have been built with a focuas on quality, communication and careful craftsmanship. By remaining a boutique builder and limiting the number of projects taken on each year, every home receives the attention it deserves.
McDowell Homes is owned and led by Trent and Emma, who take a hands-on role in every project – from the first conversation through to final handover. Their goal is to make the building journey as positive and collaborative as possible, ensuring each home reflects the lifestyle, land and aspirations of the people who will live in it.
Their philosophy is simple:
A home that’s unmistakably yours
Award-winning
workmanship recognised by industry bodies (HIA / MBA)
Client focused
and well organised, with pride in exceeding expectations
Client involvement
as much input as you’d like, from design to handover
Boutique by choice
capped projects for impeccable service
Trusted trades
fully licensed and insured team and subcontractors
Moments that make the work worthwhile
Across more than three decades of building, McDowell Homes has completed many challenging and rewarding projects.
One that stands out is a renovation at Wanda Beach in Salamander Bay for Camp Quality.
The project transformed the property into a retreat where families experiencing childhood cancer could take a break from treatment, relax together and create positive memories.
For Trent and Emma, it remains one of the most meaningful projects they have worked on.

Port Stephens isn’t just where we work
- it’s home.
From early morning walks along Birubi Beach at Anna Bay, long lunches at Shoal Bay and days spent exploring the Port Stephens and Myall Lakes waterways, the lifestyle here is something Trent and Emma, along with their 4 children, value deeply. It’s also what shapes the homes they build.
Living and working locally means understanding the things that matter when designing homes in this region – capturing coastal views, managing light and breezes, and creating spaces that feel effortless to live in year-round.
It’s this connection to place that influences every project, helping ensure each home feels perfectly suited to the Port Stephens lifestyle.
